Greek communists: Alexandroupolis must be a port of the peoples, not a base or a target of the imperialists!

On 27–29 May, the organizations of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE) in the universities of Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, Central Macedonia, and Western Macedonia, set up a camp in Alexandroupolis, sending a strong message against the transformation of the city into a launching pad for war and the involvement of the country in the imperialist war.

Based on the new Greece-US agreement on bases, Alexandroupolis has been selected for the establishment of a new US base, while it is already being used for the transfer of NATO weapons and troops to Eastern Europe.

The U.S. to set up new military bases in Greek islands, reports say

Does the U.S. government intend to install new military bases in Greece? According to news reports in Greece, U.S. military installations have been scheduled to take place in the Aegean Sea.

The Athens daily "Estia" reported that "the Ministry Defense has contacted the U.S. embassy and proposed the construction of a large heliport in a flat-island close to Kalymnos, in order to be used as a base for the landing and refueling of allied helicopters".

These scenarios are combined with the maintenance and upgrade process of the U.S-NATO military bases within Greece's territory, which was agreed during Prime Minister Tsipras' visit to Washington DC last October. In the northern city of Alexandroupolis, the U.S. have already set up a military base in the port, while there are plans for construction works in the Aegean island of Syros, the port of which could also be used as a hub for U.S-NATO forces.

Greek soldiers refused to guard NATO's base: "We will never carry out any service supporting NATO killers"

Archive Photo.
According to a report published in "Rizospastis", soldiers denied to participate in the guarding of NATO's newly established helicopter base at the port of Alexandroupolis, in northern Greece.

Talking to Rizospastis, one of the Greek soldiers - who perform their military service- said:

"We will never guard, or carry out any other service that supports NATO and the American murderers of the people. That is what I personally supported in my report to the (military) command. My colleagues did the same. It is provocative and unacceptable that they bring in our country, in our home, NATO's army which plan and unleash wars against the people."

The U.S. ambassador in Greece Geoffrey Pyatt made some quite revealing remarks about the interest of the United States regarding the strategic role of Greek ports and maritime industry, during a speech at the 17th Navigator Maritime Forum.

Here is part of the report by the Athens News Agency-Macedonian News Agency (bold letters are ours):
Commenting on Prime Minister Tsipras' recent visit to Chicago and Washington, he said it strengthened Greek-U.S. ties and that "the message Americans heard throughout the visit, at the very highest levels, was that Greece is back, open for business and a pillar of stability in its region."
